Unity Asset Store

The Unity Asset Store can be a great source of 3D models and other assets for use in Styly. In order to bring these assets into Styly, we must do the following steps:

  1. Purchase the Asset (if not free)
  2. Download the Asset
  3. Import the Asset into Unity
  4. Upload the Asset to Styly.

We will cover the first three steps here, and the final step, uploading to Styly, is covered in our tutorial on the Styly Unity Uploader.

Open your project or created a new one.  Then, open the window titled “Asset Store”.

If this window doesn’t appear or you can’t find it, you can also open it by going to Window > Asset Store or pressing Ctrl 9.

If you know what kind of asset you are looking for, you can type a search query into the search box.  Alternatively, you can use the menu on the right-hand side to browse through different categories of assets.

Once you’ve made a search query or selected a category, you can further refine your search, if necessary. To do this, simply alter the parameters at the top of the screen.  For instance, you can limit your search to free assets, or only show assets released in the past year.

Click on the thumbnail of an asset to go to it’s page, where you can review screenshots of the asset, as well as more detailed information.  Once you’ve decided on an asset, click the blue button that says “Buy” to purchase the asset.  If it is free, this button will say “Download” instead.  Click it to begin the download.

Once the download is complete, a new window will appear listing all the assets in the asset package.  Leave all of these checked, and click “Import”.

Once imported, the asset will be located in a new folder in your asset folder. Navigate to it now.

This folder usually contains many items, often including a pre-made scene and all the individual models, shaders, materials, and scritps used to create the asset.  However, for now we just want to upload the entire assembled model to Styly.  The asset will usually include a prefab of the assembled model located in a folder called “Prefabs”.  Navigate to this now.

Once you’ve located the prefab, go ahead and upload it to Styly.  If you are unsure about how to do this, please see our tutorial on the Styly Unity Uploader.
